Posle Prvog svetskog rata, dvojica drugova, demobilisanih oficira, nosilaca najviših odlikovanja za hrabrost, vraćaju se mirnodopskom životu. Prvi postaje komandant žandarmerije, a drugi nalazi razoreno ognjište koje pokušava da oživi. Međutim, on dolazi u sukob s vlastima, biva uhapšen, beži iz zatvora. Tako postaje odmetnik progonjen od vlasti. Njegov ratni drug, sadašnji žandar, nađe se u ulozi gonioca, kojem odmetnuti hajduk izmiče...
